Ludo rules: how to play Ludo and win more games

The rules of Ludo explained simply, from rolling a six to start, to captures, safe squares and getting home, plus tips to win.

The board

Ludo is played by two to four players, each with four tokens of one colour starting in their base. Tokens travel once round the board and then up their own coloured home column.

Starting

You need a six to bring a token out onto your start square. Every six also gives you an extra roll, but three sixes in a row ends your turn.

Capturing

Land exactly on an opponent’s token to send it back to base. Tokens on safe star squares and start squares cannot be captured.

Getting home

You must land exactly on the home square, so near the end you may need a precise roll. The first player with all four tokens home wins.

Tips

Spread your risk across two tokens instead of rushing one. Stop on safe squares when an opponent is close behind you. Use your sixes to bring new tokens out early.
